The Not So Green Bike: Carbon Fiber's Carbon Footprint

"The not so green bike: carbon fiber's carbon footprint

Much is made about the environmental benefits of cycling. Bicycles are almost universally touted as being “good” for the environment, because riding a bike is green due to their small—if any—carbon footprint when compared to automobiles. But—even disregarding their environmentally costly production—what about the carbon fiber footprint that is left when a carbon bike ends up in a landfill?"

Pinarello X Diesel Collabo 2012 "Only the Brave"

"Pinarello's technology and know-how blend with Diesel's style and creativity to create "Only the Brave", the brand-new urban bike to ride the world's streets.

Single speed, light and versatile to adapt safely to all kinds of urban streets, it reminds of the American messenger bikes in its design and soul, but it is also the result of a careful study of balances and strengths - like all Pinarello models.

Pinarello works on all its creations inside its R & D lab, where the line of the bike was studied together with the Diesel Creative Team and developed by the Pinarello lab through the SOE system. The Hydroformed Aluminium 6061 T6 used for the frame allows for an original and distinctive design, while preserving handling agility and cornering ability, two crucial features while riding urban streets."

Klein Track Bike 1975

"Klein track bike at the New York Bike Show, February 1975.

This marked the introduction of Gary Klein's welded aluminum frame to the public. I remember speaking to Gary Klein at the show that day. As you can see, the booth was bare-bones; I think he had a flier explaining his design idea. From my basic engineering knowledge, I understood what he was driving at, and realized this could be a real breakthrough. Little did I (and Gary) know that as usual, a Frenchman, Nicholas Barra, had beaten him to it by about 40 years. But I remember talking to Gary Klein and telling him that while the design and craftsmanship were great, I found his bicycle very ugly. He laughed and said "I think it's beautiful". Spoken like a true engineer. Note the steel (!) Cinelli track bars and stem, and the steel fork. Sugino track crankset."

Cyclops Mutant

Somewhat scary Cyclops Track Frame By Mike Mulholland, currently for sale on Ebay.

"This is a custom hand built Track Bike by Cyclops builder Mike Mulholland of Canada in Vernon BC Canada. This frame was built for Canadian Olympic Track Sprinter Jim Fisher for the 1999 PanAmerica Games. Custom Double tubing chain and seat stay for extra strength. Gives the stiffness of an aluminium frame with the comfort of steel."

Natas Kaupas

So it turns out Natas Kaupas rides a tarck bike with a riser and front brake, just like pretty much everybody these days.

Somehow I find that just a tiny bit disappointing actually. Like the mythical hero of your youth has grown up and is just a regular guy after all, you know? But those are some cool SIDIs btw.

Louis Vuitton Polo Bike

Louis Vuitton Polo Bike with all necessary accessories.
Is this the end of bike polo as we know it?

"Recently Louis Vuitton teamed up with polo bike players Hannes Hengst and Grégory Barbier to produce their very own LV Polo Bike. The details of each part of the bike are very impressive.

“From the embossed leather pedal straps and mallet holders, to the machined chainring (by Victoire), etched barplugs, via the leather wheel cover, culminating with a spectacular hollowed out mallet head, attached to a fully wrapped shaft. All of it using the classic Vuitton patterns and shapes.”

Intersection Magazine France were the first to get it in front of their lens and present it in their current issue."

Return of the "Cannondale Tarck 1000"

It's not April Fools Day, or is it? From Prolly's:

"I know I am always saying "steel is real" but I couldn't pass up the opportunity to work with Cannondale USA on the return of their beloved track bike. A few months back, the PR&D team hit me up, asking what they should do for their 2012 line since their current models weren't selling. I told them to go back to their roots and pick up where the mid-90's track bikes left off. After a lot of back and forth about how to make these bikes "hip" enough to sell at high-end track bike boutique shops, we came to a consensus. Available in three limited edition colorways, the Cannondale Tarck 100 is slated for release early 2012. Now you don't have to pay top dollar for 20 year old, fatigued aluminum!"

Also, holy seat angle, Batman...

Liberati Pursuit Pista & Olympia Pista

I've just been offered these two extremely lovely Italian framesets directly from Italy but cannot justify either of them, unfortunately. Liberati (size "53") comes with the pictured parts as well as a second drilled-for-brakes 650 forks and some Campagnolo cranks too. If you're interested, send me an email and I will send back the contact details of the seller. There are plenty more photos and I believe worldwide shipping can be arranged.

All right, both frames are apparently now sold. Congratulations for the new owners.

La retardo vuelta de Puente Nuevo – The Movie

La retardo vuelta de Puente Nuevo – The Movie from Martin Lang on Vimeo.

"La retardo or “Retarden” is a bikerace for one geared bikes. The race is arranged once a year by different clubs on different locations in Sweden. This year it was the sixth year and the NIEUWEBRUG FIETS-CLUB with Lukas and Magnus that was holding the rally flag. And they did that like no other. 120km trough the woods of Småland. Almost 50 people showed up and fought for there lives. A day full of Hornet attacks, crashes and people that got lost in the woods."
