VPCX 2011 // Kivikko, Helsinki

VPCX 2011 - Kivikko from Rhubarb on Vimeo.

Third race of the unofficial unsanctioned VPCX 2011 Cup in Kivikko, Helsinki. It was muddy as hell, and fun.

The VPCX Cup has been running for several years already and those "V and "P" stand for "Wrong" "Paths". It's a free-for-all cyclocross race series but strictly only those riding bikes with no suspension and drop bars are rewarded precious cup points. While some people rode fixed bikes too, I rode my Beasley 650B SS MTB but wouldn't have earned any points anyway.

Photos stolen from rodwell & Parker respectively.

Winter Riding // Fixed Cyclocross

PX's neat riding video from last winter which I've somehow overlooked and not posted at the time but better late than never, right? The winter is nearing fast and all the blogs are posting cyclocross videos and bikes so why not.

"Winter snow offroad cycling (-14°C) with a cyclocross fixie bike, local forests and woods in Oulu, Northern Finland. Recorded with a GoPro Hero, with a chest mount, 6th of January 2011. It's minus 14 degrees Celsius, that should be about 7 degrees Fahrenheit."

SJT Recycled Fixed 29er MTB

Santtu's latest project is damn awesome. DIY fixed 29er MTB, with frame built mostly from parts scavenged from several old dead frames. The 'hanging' dropout design is pretty neat in itself and the tiny frame size makes the bike look almost like a 36er. The rear fixed hub and the beefy lockring are also designed and machined by the man himself. Gotta respect the mad metal working skills in effect here!

Rapha Goes MTB: Privateer #1

Makers of Rapha's Rouleur road cycling magazine have decided to do a MTB magazine, Privateer. Which is nice, now were only waiting for Rapha's MTB range of clothing, right? As well as from their website, you can also get the first issue of Privateer from Wiggle.

Also, interestingly Rapha has completely dropped their 'Fixed' products, or actually changed all of them over into their City Riding line instead. Sign of the times?

Anyway, I'm happy with this because I just got me a new rigid steel single speed 650B (yes...) MTB, my first proper off-road bike in years.
