For its first year anniversary on June 16^th, 48x17 Cycles in Athens, with the support of Trimble Racing, is hosting a track and fixed gear endurance race from Athens to Marathon Lake and back. Covering a distance of 66,6 km the race pays tribute to the sole road cycling event of the first Modern Olympic Games of 1896. Back then gears, brakes and deralleurs were not yet invented and all bicycles were fixed gear and brakeless. Greek Aristides Konstantinides won the gold, followed by German August von Gödrich and Briton Edward Battel. With Tokyo Fixed and Cadence prizes, music and drinks at the 48x17 premises and free accommodation available for international riders, let’s see what goes down this time. Join the most epic of all races.

The American Fixed Gear(tm) tour is getting more interesting than following last TdF, actually. I, among many other people I guess, am wishing these guys the best of luck once they will actually hit the mountains, riding -brakeless and all that.

Wait, so they're gonna ride down from Vancouver all the way to Mexico on a tricktrack bike wearing casual urban clothing? Not wanting to be a hater or anything byt that sounds damn epic for sure, just maybe for wrong reasons. I wish them all the luck!

Maglia Nera

"From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: Maglia Nera

The "Maglia Nera" was a black jersey awarded as a symbolic prize in cycling competition at the Giro d'Italia, given to the last man to finish the race. It was allocated between 1946 and 1951.

There was real competition to win this particular jersey. Especially noted are the struggles between Sante Carollo and Luigi Malabrocca, to see whom could waste the most time. Each tried to lose more time than the other by hiding in bars, barns, and behind hedges, or even by puncturing their own wheels. In 1948 the honor was awarded to the Tuscan Aldo Bini, who according to some journalists and fans of the time, stubbornly continued the race until the end, despite a broken right hand suffered in a mass crash, and the suffering that especially in the mountain stages forced him to get off the bike and push it uphill. The special ability of the black jersey was, in addition to not being "discovered", to reach the finish directly within the maximum time.

The term "maglia nera" was later used in other contexts to indicate the bottom club in a league, often giving it a negative connotation.

In 2008 a similar "black number" was introduced, won by Markus Eichler of Team Milram."
