Pelago Bicycles 2012 Sneak Peak // Competition

A lil' sneak peak at the Pelago Bicycles range for 2012 and a naming competition. Looks sweet to me.

"We are introducing some new models next year. First of them shall be this light weight bicycle – a classic mixte with a modern approach. Full cromo frame with butted main tubes.
There's only one little problem: the beloved child has many names and we've had hard time making up our minds which one to record in the books. There's a few suggestions below; which one do you prefer – or how would you call it if you were to decide? Thumb-click the proposal you like or suggest your own. We will draw a winner amongst the votes and reward the best proposal."

Tikkurilan Ajomies Ad feat. Paulus

This is apparently 'organic advertising' and somehow part of the Helsinki Design Week? Anyhow, Paulus who is running the Hyötypyörä courier service wants to thank and recommend Eppu and his Tikkurilan Ajomies bike shop. Listen to him, I believe the man knows what he is talking about here.

Oh, and including also a KRNKY cell holster gaining nation wide media exposure.

From here.

Grey Market x Pelago Collabo

"For this limited edition of bicycles we applied track ends to a roadster and dropped the steel into a zinc pot. We equipped the bike with coaster brake and 42 mm puncture protected tires. The result is a solid and simplified bicycle for the cobbled downtown streets. The project cherishes our skateboard background and honours Grey Market for their contribution to street culture.”

Production batch number one is a limited edition of 25 pieces available exclusively through Pelago and Grey Market Supply. Full assembly available in three sizes 53, 57 and 61 during early June."

Pelago Bicycles: Stavanger

Pelago Bicycles' randonneur / commuter type bike Stavanger, brand new for 2010. Not exactly my type of bike - not just yet, at least - but looking mighty good nonetheless. It's actually so new it's not even on their site yet.

And yeah, it's not fixie nor even single speed but who cares because Pelago are my homies reppin' my hood Vallila, Helsinki baby!

Ripaus took the photo at Go Expo 2010, thanks.

Orlowski Frames

First Orlowski frames are soon arriving to Finland, to the Kumiluoti shop to be specific. And again, I like plenty the way they look.

Apparently Mr. Orlowski had the honor of being the first (and so far still the only?) western / gaijin frame builder granted with the prestigious NJS certication in Japan. So the quality should be top-notch. Just waiting to hear about the prices now...

EDIT.

Ok, maybe Orlowski was never a NJS certified frame builder, I've no ways of finding out whether it is true or not but the rumor certainly persists on the interwebz and everyone probably agrees that it doesn't hurt his brand and reputation in this game.

New Single Speed / Fixed Gear Bike Shop 'Kumiluoti' Opens in Helsinki

News from Helsinki.

A new single speed & fixed gear specialist bike shop 'Kumiluoti' opens in Kallio, 'a gentrifying former working class uptown district' of Helsinki next week. Nice surprise here as I hadn't even heard of this before. I've no idea about who is behind this or what will be in their selection but it the shop is located very near where I live which is cool. If this is the spot I am suspecting it is, there used to be briefly a MTB/BMX shop Hi5Bikes before this.

EDIT. No, it's actually not that spot. This is a space where used to be (is?) a tattoo parlour or something like that.

But oh yeah, 'Kumiluoti'? It's Rubber Bullet in english, another Finnish lesson here for all of you out there.

There's actually a real concentration of bike shops in Kallio now within couple of blocks radius, there's Cycle Centre which I consider as my LBS, Kallio Pyörä, and a bigger chainstore name of which I cannot recall right now.

I'll probably go the opening to check the new place out, get some photos AND some free juice (without the Gin?) and biscuits they are promising to offer on opening date.

* * * EDIT 2. * * *

I need to add that there are already other bike shops in Helsinki carrying FG/SS parts and which have the expertise and have supported the scene for a long time, these being maybe the best examples, although they're located not-so-centrally unfortunately:

For hard-to-find parts: http://www.pyoratohtori.fi/
For knowledge and service: http://www.pyorahuolto.com/
For 29er/XC/SS MTB stuff: http://www.tikkurilanajomies.fi/
For real track stuff: http://www.horscategorie.com

So if you're visiting Helsinki and want to check out the bike shops, all of these places, including the Kumiluoti shop, are very much recommended.

EDIT 3.

Since I've noticed that lot of people are reading this and Googling up info on Kumiluoti, I need to add that there's a rumour going around that they are getting 'a shipment of NOS parts and stuff from Germany...' before the opening, whatever that will mean.

EDIT 4.
