News about the new Pelago bike shop around my hood here in Vallila, Helsinki, broke about a month ago but no one seemed to know anything about it until last week, when the guys made it straight into the biggest newspaper in the country, even before their shop even opened up. Good for them and it's always nice to have friends who work in the media... In fact I know Timo too, he's one of the two brothers behing the whole thing but I just wasn't hip to what he'd been up to lately.
Anyhow, it turned out that Pelago is actually not just a bike but a full bike brand instead. And they don't do fixed gear bikes either, but more like those European-style classic city bikes. And quite nice ones too, kind of bikes my girlfriend would love to ride, for example.
"The idea for Pelago has developed during the last 10 years. Riding long kilometers in the city and out on the road has brought us where we are. We have taken part in bike development at the university, learned our lessons at a local service shop, dug out parts from junk yards, and fixed bikes for our friends. Yet there is still a lot to explore, and that keeps us motivated. Our aim is to make bicycles that you can be as proud of as we are – bikes that still ride in 2050 – bikes that serve the purpose."
"Durable, useful, beautiful. In 2009 we introduce our first bicycles and open a shop and service in Vallila district, uptown Helsinki. The bikes are made in Europe, lugged steel frames for men and women, from single speeds to 8-speeds. We offer reliable, affordable bikes for everyday use. Click here to take a closer look and get one for yourself. This is where we start. Where you take Pelago, is up to you.
